“I know it has a lot of calories, but what doesn’t?”asked Diane Haulk, co-owner of Haulk’s Maple.
There’s a new exhibit on the Skowhegan fairgrounds that is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth but might also teach you a thing or two about Maine’s maple syrup industry.
Three local family businesses have set up shop in this sugar house to demonstrate how a tree is tapped, to display their Maine-made products, and to answer any questions you might have about maple syrup, from its flavor to its nutritional value.
“You’ll see there are informational facts telling about the ingredients and maple syrup is now number five on the list for anti-toxins. Some of the cancer research hospitals are encouraging their cancer patients to eat nothing but maple syrup as far as a sweetener now,” said Haulk.
It’s no wonder the Skowhegan State Fair finally features a maple syrup sugar house as Somerset County is the largest supplier of Maine maple syrup in the country. The unseasonably warm weather led to a record year for some businesses, especially in southern Maine.
“Last spring time was difficult at times because the southern part of the state was so warm, so they started early. But it didn’t get warm here until into March and then we’d have three days of warm weather and then it would be frozen. So it was hard to get it toward the end of the season. But when it came, it came. It came fast,” said Haulk.
While Maine traditionally produces less maple syrup than Vermont or New York, this industry has become more than just a profitable pastime here in the state. It’s a tradition that has endured generations and will endure many more at this fair as the hope is to bring the sugar house back next year bigger and better.
